Bioethicist, and Associate Professor of Public Health, at the University of Ghana. He has received academic training in Nutrition, Public Health, and Bioethics.
Currently, his research and professional interests span two distinct, yet related areas of public health: bioethics (including food and nutrition ethics, ethics & public health; health & human rights); and public health nutrition (e.g. including nutritional epidemiology, food environments, food systems, and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases).
He has led/co-led over 20 successful research grants at the University of Ghana, including the “Dietary Transitions in Ghanaian Cities”; and the “Dietary Transitions in African Cities Projects”. These projects examined how social, and physical environments drive consumption of energy dense nutrient-poor foods and beverages.
He is the Principal Investigator of the IDRC-funded ‘MEALS4NCDs Prevention Project’, which is providing Measurement, Evaluation, Accountability and Leadership Support for obesity/NCDs prevention in Ghana.
He is also a Co-Principal Investigator and Ghana-Lead of an NIH-funded project which facilitated the establishment of a MSc. programme in Bioethics at the University of Ghana – the first of such in Ghana.
Dr Laar leads the implementation of INFORMAS’ (International Network for Food and Obesity/NCDs Research, Monitoring and Action Support) Modules in Ghana.
He is a member of the Ghanaian public health advocacy network - Coalition of Actors for Public Health Advocacy (CAPHA), and immediate past President of African Nutrition Association.
