Director of the UFR Territories – Environment - Societies and Associate Professor at the Geography Department. Paris 8 University. France

Since 2008 Hugo Pilkington has been lecturer in the Geography Department of Paris 8 University and also a researcher at UMR 7533 Ladyss (Laboratory for Social Dynamics and Territories Reconstruction). He was Head of the Geography Department of his institute from 2010 to 2014, and is now the Director of UFR EriTES (studies, research and engineering in territories, environments and societies). He has also been elected member of the Academic Council (CAC) of the ComUE Université Paris Lumières (UPL) since 2015, and of the board of the University Paris 8 since September 2016. In January 2017 he was designated knight of the Academic Awards Order.

Hugo Pilkington focuses his pedagogical activities on a fundamental and highly specialized teaching to various audiences. He also teaches Health Geography in several medical degrees in France and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to students in Master of Public Health.

At the same time, he continues his research and publication activities with diverse Public Health organizations and actors such as the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), French National Health and Medical Research Body (Inserm), and Public Health France, mixing fundamental and applied research in health. His research activities deal with the way mother and child’s health builds itself in a spatial and social context through the study of the spatial organization of health care, in particular maternity wards. He also works on spatial and social inequalities of perinatal health, and the environmental impact on pregnant women and new born babies’ health.

Hugo Pilkington is involved in the scientific and redaction committees of the Pollution Atmosphérique: Climat, Santé, Société magazine. He reviews articles on a regular basis for international journals of rank A (Annales de Géographie, Health and Place, International Journal of Health Geographics, Social Science and Medicine) and he works as an expert for the World Health Organization, the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the city of Paris.
